The Things He Carries

I'm taking a children's literature class and I have the trill of reading The Hobbit once again. I just finished the chapter which introduces one of my favorite literary characters, Gollum. I thought all you Gollum fans out there might enjoy this little list taken from Chapter V:

The Things Gollum Keeps in His Pockets
fish-bones
goblins' teeth
wet shells
a bit of bat wing
a sharp stone to sharpen his fangs on
and other nasty things

i've always wondered what 'other nasty things' gollum kept in his pockets. i love stories that use this great literary device, because it sets the reader off on imagining what other strange and horrible things he coiuld be hiding in his trousers. if i'm honest, i'm now convinced that the rest of the pocket-space was filled with bits of crushed up beetles.

It has been YEARS since I've read the Hobbit! I've re-read the trilogy and Silmarilian a few times in the last 5 or 6 years, but I really need to get back to the Hobbit. Thanks for this bit of inspiration! I hope you and Andrew are well! I'm glad to have this little window into your life!
peace,
