There's No Place Like Dressew

Maryka and Kevin came up to Vancouver last weekend. They said they wanted to hang out with Andrew and me but I think the real reason for the visit is that Maryka has become a Dressew Junkie. Dressew is a bargain basement wonderland full discount fabric and sewing related notions that has to be seen to be believed.

Kevin is thinking, "Maryka better not buy that creepy plastic doll's head! I don't care if it's only 25 cents!"

So much fabric, so little time.

Buttons! Buttons! Buttons!

Oh, my! Come to Vancouver and see for yourself!

Oh. Wow. It's tempting to follow Maryka's lead, but I get overwhelmed by decisions. I'd either walk out with way more than I could handle, or nothing.

Hello. My name is Maryka and I'm a Dressew-aholic. It's so hard to say no! But I'm making all kinds of fun projects.

I just had the most terrible experience ever at Dressew.
They refused to take my visa card. They said their credit card machines couldn’t take any visas that wern’t canadian!

I have used this card to travel all over the world and it has worked in every shop i have used it in. So i asked if they would take american cash. THis was a purchse of a couple hundred dollars, and so it was lucky that i had that much on me. THen they rang up the purchase with an extra 10 % added on!

The exchange rate is about on par. They insisted that it was at $1.10 . The cashier was unhelpful and dismissive, and so i asked to speak the the manager. When the manager came down she ignored me, talked to the cashier, then told me that she wasn’t going to do anything about the situation. Then she summarily swept my fabric off the table and walked away.

I have never met so many rude old ladies in one place in my life.

I went upstairs and asked the cashier up there if i could have the names of the owners. She said that she couldn’t give those out. I asked her for anyone above the level of the manager and she said that she was sorry, she just couldn’t help me… but…

i could call the next day. They answer the phone between nine and ten in the morning.

wow

i have never had a worse experience with a fabric store in my life.
It was terrible.
I will never go back there again and am warning all of my friends and co-workers to not pass through their doors. THey simply don’t treat anyone like a human being, and don’t seem to want to take your money either.

I miss DressSew desperately, but yes they can be terribly rude--i used to just take a wad of cash and if it wasn't enough, dropped bits on the floor :}
It's an incredible place for the sewists/mixed media artists!

I love Dressew to death for their selection, but that's all. I find the service there is lacking. They all seem so rude and cold. Would a smile really kill them?

I also find they don't restock often enough, there would be times where I'd be waiting for monthes and monthes for a certain fabrique and color.

I'm a new stitcher planning my first trip to Dressew. I feel for commenter Domini - as an American engaged to a Canadian I've learned a few simple rules. If you're going to a store that's not a big chain take Canadian cash. Never ask them if they take US Cash and leave your US Visa card in your pocket. Many Canadians are willing to take out their frustrations with the US on any American they encounter.

@ domini - The machines don't accept credit cards AT ALL, regardless of where it's from. They only accept Canadian DEBIT. Anything affiliated with a credit card won't go through. Aka a lot of American debit, which is affiliated with Visa. Get over yourself and listen properly.

@ Jess - Specific fabrics you want can't be materialized out of thin air. Fabrics are brought when they can get them. When's the last time you pulled a bolt of fabric out your ass? That's what I thought.
